We had training while we were waiting to be approved and it gave us so much confidence. If we have an issue and need support we know we can talk to the team and get help straight away

Training for Foster Carers

It’s important that all of our Foster Carers have the right skills and experience they need to handle whatever comes their way.

If you decide to ‘Foster for Knowsley’, all that you will need to do is demonstrate that you have an understanding of children and have had contact with them before. No previous training is required. Our training will start at the application process, where you will be invited to attend a two day initial training course ‘Skills to Foster’ which offers a real insight into the demands and rewards of fostering. This training course will also give you the chance to speak to our existing carers and hear what it’s really like to foster.

Once you have been approved as a Foster Carer, your designated Social Worker will work closely with you to identify any skills and training you may need. We will ensure that you continue your learning and development and will create a comprehensive training programme for you to continue your fostering career.

Tax and National Insurance for Foster Carers

HM Revenue & Customs' (HMRC) online learning guide for Foster Carers provides advice on tax and National Insurance issues.

You may also be interested in a free online seminar (webinar) offered by HMRC for Foster Carers and anyone considering becoming a Foster Carer.

These sessions can be completed from the comfort of your own home by clicking on the date you want to register then logging on at the appropriate time.

The webinar will include a basic guide to tax and National Insurance issues affecting Foster Carers, as well as an explanation of what Qualifying Care Relief is and how it works, how to keep records and what to put on your tax return. You can also ask questions during the session.
